What’s The Deal With…?

Surf Technique Deep Dive

You want a clean, angled spear, not a belly flop. As you paddle to meet the wave, take one or two strong, deep strokes to build momentum. Grab the rails near the front of your board (around chest-width apart), then in one fluid motion, push the nose down at about a 45-degree angle while shifting your weight forward. Your body follows the board’s path under. A clean entry slices through the surface tension and gets you deeper with less effort. It’s all about that smooth, committed motion.

It’s all about building the ladder, not jumping off the cliff. Start by getting absolutely comfortable in solid overhead waves at your home break. Then, focus on your equipment—a board with enough paddle power and rocker is key. Work on your breath-hold and duck-dive in heavy conditions. Finally, find a trusted crew or mentor to paddle out with you. It’s a gradual process of building confidence, fitness, and respect for the ocean’s power. You can’t force it; you grow into it.

Speaking the language is key to not sticking out like a kook. Knowing the difference between a closeout and a peeling wave, or that “inside” means closer to the peak, helps you read the lineup and communicate. It shows you understand the basics and respect the tribe. When someone yells “party wave!“ or says it’s “barreling,“ you’ll know what’s going down and can join the fun instead of getting in the way.

Surf Travel Adventures

Pack light, but smart. Bring your favorite boardies and a couple of rash guards. The resort will have premium sunscreen and maybe even hats. Definitely pack a go-to leggy or warm wetsuit top for dawn patrols. Include one nice outfit for a fancy dinner night. Most importantly, bring multiple pairs of board shorts—nothing worse than putting on damp ones! They’ll have the tech gear and boards, so just bring your stoke.

First, get dry and warm. Chug some water and eat a solid brekkie—you’ve burned energy. A quick stretch feels great on those paddling muscles. If you’re heading to work, the stoke will carry you. That natural salt hair is your badge of honor. You’ve already achieved something epic, so the day’s normal stresses often feel smaller. That post-surf clarity is real. Just maybe don’t schedule a big meeting for 9 AM if you’re still dreaming of that one perfect left.

For men, it’s claiming the World Title and getting your name on that iconic trophy. For women, it’s the same incredible achievement. It’s the culmination of a year-long global grind, being the most consistent and dominant surfer across every kind of break. Beyond the trophy, it’s about etching your name into surfing history alongside the greats. The respect from your peers and the surfing community is the real, lasting reward. It’s the dream every grom grows up with.
