What’s The Deal With…?

Surf Gear Essentials

Go thick or stay home, bro. For airline travel, you want at least 10mm of closed-cell foam padding. This stuff absorbs impacts instead of transferring them to your glass. Top bags have 15mm or more. Don’t just rely on the bag, either—toss in some bubble wrap or clothes around the nose, tail, and rails for extra insurance. A thin sock bag is a recipe for disaster; proper padding is the difference between scoring perfect barrels and dealing with a repair shop.

Talk about everything! Your surfing level, the waves you chase most often, and what you want the board to do. Mention if you want more speed, tighter turns, or better paddle power. Discuss dimensions, but trust their expertise on fine-tuning the foam. Talk fin boxes (thruster, quad, single?) and tail shapes. The more you share about your surfing life, the better they can translate your vision into foam and fiberglass. It’s all about creating your perfect wave-riding partner.

You gotta commit and get that tail down, bro! After you press the nose under, immediately follow through by planting a knee or your foot on the tail pad to submerge the whole board. Arch your back and get your body deep, almost like you’re doing a little underwater push-up. The wave’s force will want to rip it from your hands, so keep a solid grip on the rails. It’s about being assertive—hesitate, and you and your board get launched backward.

It’s all about the waiting period. Events have a window of days to run, and sometimes the swell just doesn’t show. But the show must go on! It actually showcases a different skill set: wave selection, board speed generation on a mushy face, and micro-maneuvers. It separates the true watermen from the rest. Anyone can get lucky on a bomb, but dominating in weak surf requires next-level strategy and technical skill. It’s chess, not checkers.

Usually, yes! Your stance tends to be consistent across all board sports. If you skate or snowboard regular, you’ll almost certainly surf regular. The muscle memory and balance are very similar. If you’re completely new to all board sports, surfing is the purest way to find your natural stance because the wave itself will tell you how you need to stand to balance and drive. It’s the original test.

Mental prep is everything out here. It starts with visualization—seeing yourself taking the drop and making the tube. You build confidence in smaller, hollow waves first. Understanding oceanography, like reading the reef and currents at Pipe, is key. Most importantly, you cultivate a calm focus. Respect the power, but don’t let fear freeze you. It’s about committing fully once you’ve paddled in.
