What’s The Deal With…?

Legendary Surf Spots

You can get wet any day of the year, but for solid, consistent waves, aim for the winter months (March to September). This is when we get those powerful south and southeast swells, and the points really light up. Summer (December to February) brings warmer water, fun northeasterly swells, and occasional tropical cyclones that can produce epic, though sometimes chaotic, conditions. The water is always warm, so you’ll rarely need more than a spring suit.

Your quiver depends on the season and break. In summer, a boardies and rash vest combo is perfect. Winter might call for a 2mm spring suit. Board-wise, bring your good-wave shortboard for the points. A hybrid or fish is awesome for smaller days at the beachies. Don’t forget the essentials: a solid leash, wax, and reef booties aren’t a bad idea for rocky points. Sun protection is non-negotiable—the Aussie sun is fierce, so use zinc and a hat.

Scoring the Superbank is about timing and a bit of luck. You want a solid east or southeast swell with light offshore winds (westerlies). It works best on a rising tide. Be prepared for a crowd—it’s one of the longest, most rippable waves on the planet, so everyone wants a piece. Paddle fitness is key, as the take-off zone can shift. Your best bet is to be patient, follow the crowd rotation, and wait for your turn. The ride can be a 2km down-the-line dream!

Legendary Surf Spots

Dude, it’s the absolute dream! We’re talking 70km of pristine coastline, pumping with four epic point breaks like Snapper Rocks and Burleigh Heads. The water’s warm year-round, and the swell is remarkably consistent thanks to its east-facing aspect. It’s a wave magnet that catches everything from cyclones to trade wind swells. Beyond the surf, the vibe is pure surf city, with a deep-rooted boardriding culture, heaps of shapers, and a lifestyle totally built around the ocean. It’s a proper surfing ecosystem.

Coolangatta/Tweed Heads is the undisputed hub. You’re literally at the southern start of the Superbank, with Snapper, Greenmount, and Kirra all within walking distance. Burleigh Heads offers an iconic point break with a killer village vibe. For a slightly quieter base, check out Palm Beach or Currumbin. All these spots are packed with surf camps, hostels, board hire shops, and cafes buzzing with surf talk, making it easy to live and breathe the lifestyle.

The vibe is generally super chill, but it’s a high-performance arena. Respect is everything. The Goldy has a strong local crew who surf these waves daily. Don’t snake, don’t drop in, and always wait your turn in the lineup. A friendly attitude goes a long way. At iconic points, there’s a recognized pecking order. Observe for a while before paddling out. Support local businesses, and you’ll find the community is incredibly welcoming to surfers who show proper ocean manners.
